Government responds to Respect @ Work

After over a year the Government has finally responded to the Respect @ Work report. While the Prime Minister announced the government had accepted all 55 recommendations a closer look at their response reveals that is not entirely true. Sex discrimination commissioner Kate Jenkins has said the government is missing an opportunity.

Go for net-zero IS worth a read

Regardless of what some people said on 4corners this week the net-zero report by the Grattan Institute is worth a read. Perhaps a copy should be sent to the Special Adviser of the National COVID-19 Commission who apparently has an open mind.

What makes a university a university

According to TEQSA’s draft legislative instrument, peer-reviewed research and publications make a university (among other things). This might contradict the push for research commercialisation. Surely both are essential.

Safety for women home and abroad

The Foreign Affairs minister released Australia’s second National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security. This plan reflects the government’s commitment to UN Security Council Resolution #1325. It is aimed at four outcomes:

  1. supporting women’s meaningful participation and needs in peace processes
  2. reducing sexual and gender-based violence
  3. supporting resilience, crisis, and security, law and justice efforts to meet the needs and rights of all women and girls
  4. demonstrating leadership and accountability for WPS

Can we spot Fake news?

A recent report on adult media literacy tells us that 74% of adults think fake news needs to be dealt with and over 80% agree or strongly agree that media literacy should be taught in schools.
